MXR Distortion III

Another effects pedal from MXR to join their range of stomp boxes is the MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal.

Billed as a distortion pedal which delivers anything from sweet singing overdrive to massive distortion crunch, this box is versatile enough to cope with any style of playing, yet will not cloud your guitars personality.

As with all MXR pedals the MXR Distortion III is constructed within a heavy duty enclosure, with a good quality switch and jack sockets for lifetime use.

With its carefully selected components and propriety electronic design, the MXR Overdrive pedal is a quite pedal which delivers rich harmonic tones. As stated the MXR is a quite pedal that only produces much in the way of noise until the Gain is cranked right up.

MXR Distortion IIISpeaking of Gain, the range of this control produces anything from light distortion to modern Metal. However, even when maxed out, the notes still retain their clarity.

The controls comprise of Tone, Gain and Output. Nice and simple, this enables the player to easily dial the sound that they like.

So for an Amp-like distortion which is warm and round, which is not overly harsh at the high end and has a smooth EQ, then the MXR Distortion III is a modern day classic.

Boss SD1 Super Overdrive

The Boss Super Overdrive SD1 is an extremely simple to use Guitar Effects Pedal which provides you with the smooth, warm distortion of an overdriven tube amp. All this is achieved without overriding the subtleties of your playing technique.

As described, the Boss SD1 is simple to use and only has three controls, affecting Level, Tone and Drive. This enables the Guitarist to easily go from mild to hard – the Sd1 can even be used as a signal booster if required.

Boss boasts that the SD1 delivers its rich authentic overdrive effects due to its unique symmetric drive circuitry. Whatever the reason, the Boss super overdrive Sd1 delivers warm  solid rock sounds, and can even be used playing the blues. Though this pedal is probably not going to be a great Metal or heavy distortion producer, a great variety of sounds and can be achieved when used in conjunction with the amp distortion of your amplifier.

Boss Sd1Physically, the construction of the pedal is rock solid; some even refer to it being built like a tank. The case has rubber on the button to help prevent it from moving about, and also has rubber on the pedals part. Many performers who had had the SD1 for a number of years rate the pedal as extremely rugged and reliable.

Summing up:

  • The Boss Sd1 is a simple to use Overdrive pedal which is great for beginners, yet should not be discounted by the more experienced player.
  • Only three controls – Gain, Tone and Level
  • Sooth, warm distortion
  • Unique symmetrical gain circuitry
  • Great for Riffs, Blues and making you solos stand out, delivering rock solid sounds
  • Maybe not the best for Metal or heavy distortion
  • Can be used as a signal booster
  • Solid reliable construction

OKKO Dominator is now available in our webshop: www.guitarteam.nl Aggressive british crunch, classic heavy metal, brutal modern high gain stuff or anything in between — the Dominator will do the job. This box has nothing in common with those overcompressed, artificial sounding “bedroom metal” distortion pedals that disappear in the mix if you try to use them in a real band situation. Raw natural gain structure, explosive attack, tight low end and great chord definition make the difference — the Dominator works equally well at home practice or stage level. The active 3-band EQ with switchable mid range frequency provides effective and intuitive control over a broad range of sounds. Just like the other OKKO drive pedals, the Dominator features an internal voltage doubler. The three gain stages and the EQ stage operate on different individually filtered voltages up to 18 volts for optimal dynamic response and very low noise performance. The Dominator works best in front of a clean amp with some headroom, especially if you use very bass heavy “chugga chugga” settings demo by Taco Visser guitar: Gibson Les Paul Studio GuitarTeamNL

The two Genz Benz Black Pearl 30′s are on a relatively clean setting for the first part for each guitar. Sennheiser 906 on the left, Shure KSM27 on the right. Echo Gina 3G soundcard into Cakewalk Sonar. After the clean comes the Effectrode Tube Drive with a 1985 NOS General Electric JAN 5965, then the Fulltone PlimSoul and finally both amps with their built in boost cranked to the max. First two Strats use the overdrive pedals on a bluesy setting and the Tele and humbucker Stat have them on crunchier settings. The little Stage 2 knob on the PlimSoul is off for the bluesy setting but cranked for the crunchy setting. The real time sound analyzer is taking the feed only from the guitar track. I did some tempo changes in Sonar which talks to the TimeLine via MIDI. Can’t figure out how to automatically change presets via Sonar though. Synth type sound between some sections is the Tele into Strymon TimeLine and BlueSky on ambient settings. First Strat is a Warmoth with Lollar Specials on the neck plus middle position. Second is the G&L S-500 in open G with Lollar Blondes in the neck and middle position. Third is Warmoth Tele in DADGAD with Lollar Vintage T’s in neck and bridge position. Last is the Black Korina Warmoth Strat in Frank Gambale tuning with a Lollar Imperial F-spaced humbucker.
