Keeley Compressor Pedal

The Keeley Compressor is a pedal which is more expensive than some of the other compressors we have reviewed, but considering the high spec components and design its not surprising.

This guitar Stompbox is a studio grade design offering true bypass switching for an unaffected clean sound when the pedal is off.

The circuit board is constructed using hand-matched transistors to a tolerance of less than 1%, plus metal film capacitors and resistors which reportedly produces the cleanest compression available.

All these high spec components produce a perfectly compressed signal, eliminating unwanted distortions.

Featuring an internal input sensitivity control, the Keeley Compressor is very effective in the studio for other instruments including drum machines, keyboards, mastering and other line-in uses.

Comments from musicians who use this pedal, rate the pedal very highly and we are hard pressed to find a negative response, except for maybe the price – but then, you get what you pay for.

The Keeley cleans up chord work completely, and the single note sustain is superb. The power consumption is extremely low, only 5mA, so a standard 9 Volt DC battery lasts a real long time. Of course the pedal also has an AC adapter connector.

The construction is rugged, with a nice clean looking design. Plus the Keeley Compressor has a reputation for reliability.

Boss CS-3 Guitar Compresson Sustainer

The Boss CS3 is constructed within a rugged metal enclosure, and comprises four controls – Level, Tone, Attack and Sustain – plus a footswitch.

The specifications quoted are that the CS-3 delivers a smooth sustain, with a balanced string response. The pedal boasts clarity and punch at any volume, and is an ideal pedal for the studio. On its own it produces a clean sound, or is great in front of a chorus or distortion pedal.

That’s the official line, so what are guitarists saying about it?

Well, initially there seem to be a number of negative comments, so let’s get them out in the open first.

The Cons.

Various people have commented that although the control functions are quite comprehensive, getting a nice sound is difficult, or results in noise or feedback.

The battery life is very short as the Boss CS-3 consumption is quite high.

Using the Sustain produces a lot of noise, while the Attack control creates a rather artificial sound.

The Pros.

Considering the negative comments, this pedal still has an overall average of 4 out of 5 stars rating, which is pretty good. Matters of noise and control etc have been addressed by other musicians and some of these problems may be caused by the pedals position in the effects loop, or the level and control settings of the other devices in the loop.

One solution is to place the Boss before other effects like your reverb or distortion. Having this pedal on at the same time as your distortion can produce some serious feedback – not always a bad thing if that’s what you are looking for.

The pedal is cool for tightening or cleaning up your sound, and with perseverance on learning the effect of just subtle use of the controls, creates an end result that is well worth the effort.

As most guitarists use a power supply for their pedals anyway, the high battery consumption no longer matters.

Many guitarists have used the Boss CS-3 for many years and would not be without one, so perhaps this pedal can’t be that bad after all.

Despite some negative comments, this pedal still rates highly amoung the majority of guitarists, and at under $100, is good value for money. Its main feature are:

This is how the pedal is quoted, but what does it mean in practicle terms?

The Electro Harmonix Black Finger Compressor Pedal boasts that it uses the same professional techniques that are used by the high end multi thousand dollar Studio Compressors. The big difference with these highly revered compressors however, is the cost. At under $200 the Black Finger comes in the form of a compact foot pedal.

As described, the Black Finger Is a Dual photocell opto-isolator. The design uses two types of light sources – one a lamp and the other a LED (Light emitting Diode). As such, one tube manages the compression stage, while the other handles the Gain.

So, whether you are using the Compressor with your Guitar, Bass or Vocals – or even as part of an effects loop – the Black Finger delivers the type of Wave shaping that other plug-ins or digital/analogue products simple cannot achieve – unless costing thousands of dollars of course.

Further to the tube design, most other tube type products use between 9 and 50 volts of swing to enable compression, whereas the Black Finger design has a full 300 volts, making this a true tube compressor in every sense.

The pedal is a mixture of compressor, Booster and Valve Preamp. It versatility makes it ideal for both Bass and Electric Guitar. The pedal is easy to overdrive and the sounds it produces are very good.

One downside however, may be the learning curve necessary to learn how to configure it properly. Some people have expressed quite negative initial comments when trying the pedal for the fisrt time. However, almost all have fallen in love with the pedal as they have mastered the controls, and would not now be without one in their Guitar Effects arsenal.

It is good to have the Tone Shaping controls to be able to create a wide range of sounds and effects, but this comes with a price of having to get to grips with the settings, compared with some of the simpler plug-in an go cheaper models. It depends on what you want – versatility of sounds, or ease of use.

For a beginner, it may be best to choose a cheaper and simpler compressor. But hey; with perseverance the Black Finger produces some awesome tones, even for the beginner.

The Emma ReezaFRATzitz Overdrive and Distortion pedal is a Danish made Effects Pedal which is a well constructed unit having a good quality switch, and smooth feeling controls.

This is a second generation Reeza  pedal which has had low and high frequency controls added, to further enable you to fine-tune your effects

This stomp box certainly has the type of name that you have to repeat a few times, to get your head round it. However, despite its handle, the ReezaFRATzitz is an excellent quality overdrive and distortion pedal which stands out from the crowd. Offering an incredible full bodied crunch, this Pedal emulates the overdrive distortion effects of a real Tube Amp.

The Pedal comes with five controls – Level, Low, High, Gain and Bias. On low levels, the box produces some nice plexi tones. However, for great sounding Metal, crank up that Level control and prepare to be blown away.  Low and High controls are fairly explanatory, enabling control over the treble and bass.

Probably the secret of the incredible tonal quality of the pedal is the Bias control. Emma reports that this allows the user to change or ‘morph’ between Class A and Class B biasing. The resulting harmonic change of the signal provides a wider variation of ‘tones’ found on your normal distortion.

Class A mode provides a sweet saturation found with the Vox AC30. For Class B, turn the control clockwise to achieve the thick chunky sounds of a Fender or Marshal. Altering the control over these two modes, enable the user to produce a wide variety of tonal options.
